Aerial view of fairways, Inverness, looking S.

DP 342901

Description Aerial view of fairways, Inverness, looking S.

Date 4/10/2012

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 342901

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Fairways driving range and the Loch Ness Golf Course opened in 1996. The Fairways building and the Bowling Club (with the white roof) are towards the bottom of the photograph. The site of Castle Heather, which gives this area of Inverness its name, is situated at the near end of the line of trees which runs down the left side of the photograph. The form of the name is in dispute. Although known locally as Castle Heather, it appears in the record as Castle Leathers and Castle Bathers, the latter being an anglicisation of the Gaelic Caisteal nan Boirach or Castle of the recluse. There is a possible prehistoric industrial site at Slackbuie just above the centre of the photograph. The new Asda supermarket is at centre right and the Southern Distributor Road runs along the bottom of the photo. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
