Scope and Content Spirit store vent, Glenlochy Distillery, Fort William, Highland Glenlochy Distillery was built in the 1890s next to the River Nevis, and used water power in its early years. It was bought in 1953 by the Distillers Company Ltd, and distillery housing erected (which has now been converted to a guest house). The site lost its link to the rail network in the 1970s, and was closed in 1983. This vent is made of louvred wooden boards within a circular frame of moulded terracotta blocks with decorative 'keystones' with central cartouches and scrollwork. The brick wall is laid in English Bond pattern, with alternating rows of 'headers' (short-ends to outside) and 'stretchers' (laid lengthwise). This type of circular window is known by the architectural term 'oculus' which means 'eye' in Latin. Lavish decorative details applied to this commercial property reflects the confidence and wealth of Victorian distillery owners in the 1890s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
