Scope and Content Professor Vere Gordon Childe at Skara Brae, Orkney Islands Skara Brae is a remarkable monument, owing its excellent preservation to burial beneath sand dunes. Since its discovery in 1850, following exposure during a violent storm, this Neolithic settlement has been extensively excavated. Professor Vere Gordon Childe, pictured here, led an excavation of Skara Brae in the 1930s following construction of new sea defences by the Ministry of Public Works in 1924. His work revealed a whole Neolithic village built from stone. Professor Vere Gordon Childe (1892-1957) was an eminent archaeologist who researched and published extensively during his lifetime. He was the Abercromby Professor of Archaeology at Edinburgh University between 1927 and 1946. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
