Aerial view of Evelix, Camore Wood, and Dornoch, East Sutherland, looking SE.

SC 1909814

Description Aerial view of Evelix, Camore Wood, and Dornoch, East Sutherland, looking SE.

Date 2002

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1909814

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content A general view looking down the A949 (just L of centre) towards Dornoch with the wooded course of the River Evelix in the foreground (running bottom R to centre L). Camore Wood, filling the centre R of the image, contains numerous hut circles and other archaeological features. Evelix House sits at a bend in the river, bottom L. The village of Camore at middle L sits on the A949. To the north of the road is an impressive ridge running at right angles across the road to the E of this. Though this is a fine example of a moraine, perhaps compromised by quarrying, it appears to have no legal protection according to NatureScot Sitelink [i.e. it is not protected as an SSSI or SAC]. Dornoch, on the Moray Firth, is just above centre. Across the top R of the image, the spit of land is Tarbat Ness, with the white village of Portmahomack just visible. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
