Scope and Content Aerial view of Restalrig, Edinburgh The village of Restalrig, to the east of Edinburgh, developed around its ancient parish church. Originally surrounded by farmland, the old village is now part of a post-1925 housing development which stretches north from the main East Coast railway line. The old village and parish church lie immediately below the roundabout, surrounded by a variety of medium-density, low-rise housing. The railway line runs to the north, passing a velodrome, part of the Meadowbank Stadium complex. The name Restalrig comes from the original late 12th-century name Lestalric, which is still occasionally used today. It was originally a medieval estate stretching from Calton Hill to the shore at Leith, and eastwards towards the Figgate Burn. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
