Scope and Content Settlement at Cacrabank Hill, Dumfries and Galloway Above Hibble Hags, on the SW flank of Cacrabank Hill, are the upstanding remains of a defended prehistoric settlement. At some stage during its occupation, a small semicircular annexe was built onto its SE side. An earth-and-stone bank, some 3.7m broad and 0.3m high, encloses the settlement with an entrance in the NE side (lower left). No surface indications of buildings survive. A later annexe, bounded by a low stony bank, overlies the SE bank of the settlement. Settlements like this probably consisted of a small community dwelling within a few timber-built round-houses with a yard for keeping animals and storage. Both animal husbandry and arable cultivation were probably practised. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
