Scope and Content Fort, Castle Hill, Crawford, Lanarkshire This small oval fort occupies a knoll at the foot of the E side of the Clyde valley. A thick wall encloses the stances for three round-houses on the sloping summit area, and an outer rampart around the foot of the knoll provides additional protection. This aerial view from the SW was taken in slanting sunlight, casting deep shadows into the gully on the N of the knoll. The wall enclosing the summit area is clearly visible, and the irregular outer rampart at the foot of the slope on the S. Numerous forts are found throughout the Border counties and into Lanarkshire. Most were occupied in the middle centuries of the first millennium BC. Some, as here but not visible on this photograph, contain traces of the stances of timber round-houses.
