Scope and Content Sorisdale, Coll, Argyll and Bute The largely deserted crofting and fishing village of Sorisdale lies on the north-east coast of Coll in the Inner Hebrides. During the mid-19th century clearances on the island, Sorisdale was the place where, in 1861, several families were given sanctuary by the Campbell family who owned the east end of Coll. This view shows the sandy beach at Sorisdale with the settlement (centre). Many of the early houses are ruined, some remain in use as stores and one (top) is currently occupied. A new house has been built at the beach head (centre right). The island of Coll was owned by the Maclean clan until 1856 when it was sold to John Stewart. The Stewarts continued the clearance of the island that had been started by the Macleans and later repopulated the island with Ayrshire dairy farmers and for a time Coll was well-known for its cheese.
