Scope and Content Dunrobin Castle and gardens, Sutherland, Highland Dunrobin Castle lies on the east coast of Sutherland, north of Golspie. It is the traditional seat of the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland and remains a private residence owned by the Countess of Sutherland. The castle is first mentioned in 1401 and was substantially remodelled and enlarged in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. This view from the south-east shows the south façade of the castle (centre). Terraced steps lead down into mid-19th century formal gardens (foreground). Part of the walled kitchen garden can be seen (centre left). Dunrobin Mains (farm) can also be seen (top right) above the main road. The external appearance of Dunrobin Castle is largely the creation of Sir Charles Barry (1795-1860), architect of the House of Commons, who, between 1835-1850, was employed to remodel the castle in the Scottish Baronial style. Barry also designed the formal gardens. Later, following a fire in 1915, Sir Robert Lorimer (1864-1929) redesigned Barry's original interior. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
