Scope and Content Rothesay was an industrial town and commercial port long before its expansion due to tourism. The earliest industries set up to take advantage of the water supply from the Water of Fad, and in 1779, Scotland's second cotton mill was established in Rothesay by James Kenyon. A number of small mills were established, basing themselves around Barone Road, Russell Street and Mill Street. The focus for the town's industry remains in this vicinity today. The area also contains a mixture of residential properties such as this detached villa at 2 Upper Union Street. Dated 1772, this plain two-storeyed, three-bayed villa has been sub-divided during the later 20th century, probably during refurbishment by Bute Housing Association in 1985. It is constructed from random rubble sandstone with red sandstone dressings. The central entrance is enclosed within a pilastered doorway and the windows are in the original six-over-six timber sash and case style. This is one of the oldest houses surviving in Rothesay, and its refurbishment in 1985 won a Saltire Society Commendation award.
