Scope and Content Ascog was a fairly dispersed, largely linear settlement until the mid- to late 19th century boom in building to meet the needs of the tourist trade saw Rothesay expanding to the extremities of Port Bannatyne in the north and Ascog in the south. This area became popular with wealthy Glasgow industrialists and merchants looking to set up a home from home on the island. As a result many of the dwellings here are large detached villas set in extensive grounds. Amongst the large residences for wealthier citizens, local philanthropist, Agnes Patrick established the Stevenson School for under-privileged boys from Glasgow, and this home for girls with the aim of providing them with a 'fresh-air fortnight'. Built in an English Tudor style with black and white mock timber-framed upper floor and red sandstone ground floor, the former home sits in an elevated position above the main coastal road. The flat-roofed single-storeyed addition (left) originally contained the changing rooms. The home closed around 1970, and has been converted to bed and breakfast/hotel accommodation (Chandlers Hotel). Despite the conversion, it retains many of its original features.
