Scope and Content A variety of detached, semi-detached and terraced houses as well as tenements were built along Rothesay's seafront during the 19th century. These range from the asymmetrical house at 25 Battery Place, to two- and three-storeyed terraced houses at 19 and 21-22 Battery Place, and five-storeyed red sandstone tenements at 18 Battery Place. A large proportion of the seafront properties have large, often projecting canted or square bay windows, which allow as much light into the rooms as possible, as well as taking full advantage of the views across the bay. Being in a prime location on the shore, many of these properties would have been used as guest houses or second homes for visitors to the island. Many of the larger houses on the seafront have subsequently been converted into flats or are still used as guest houses and small hotels. There are a large number of 'Glasgow-style' tenements in Rothesay, reflecting the destination of the majority of its visitors during the 19th century. Many are built from the same red sandstone as their equivalents in Glasgow, and have several features seen in the city including the tiled 'wally closes' and the use of stained glass in entrance doorways.
