Scope and Content A variety of detached, semi-detached and terraced houses as well as tenements were built along Rothesay's seafront during the 19th century. These range from the asymmetrical house at 25 Battery Place, to two- and three-storeyed terraced houses at 19 and 21-22 Battery Place, and five-storeyed red sandstone tenements at 18 Battery Place. Glendale, at 20 Battery Place displays one of the prominent features of the townscape across Rothesay -the use of cast iron decoration. In this case, the circular bay is topped with a decorative cast-iron coronet, while the windows throughout the building have decorative fluted cast-iron mullions. The front elevation is mostly glazed to get as much light into the building as possible, and the circular bay with its tall arched windows maximises the views across the bay. A large proportion of the seafront properties have large, often projecting canted or square bay windows, which allow as much light into the rooms as possible, as well as taking full advantage of the views. Being in a prime location on the shore, many of these properties, like Glendale, would have been used as guest houses and small hotels, or second homes for visitors to the island. Many of the larger houses on the seafront have subsequently been converted into flats or are still used as guest houses and small hotels.
