Scope and Content Cup-marked rock at Ballygowan, Argyll and Bute The cup-marked rocks at Ballygowan are one of several example in the area. They lie within a fenced enclosure, and though not the largest example, the carvings are amongst the best preserved. This is a view of the rock. There are eleven cup-and-ring markings, each with up to three rings. Some of these have grooves leading from the centre. There are also around sixty individual cup-marks and a horse-shoe shaped carving. A number of uses for such markings have been suggested, including maps, calendars, astronomical or even that they were done as acts of penance. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
