Sample CH06#61 Context 924 Midden layer 924 in Area C (the midden and double roundhouse northwest of the main excavation). Deposit of orange peat ash forming a midden layer near the base of the upper midden sequence. It lies on top of midden layer 925 and is sealed by midden layer 923. Site Phase 9. The carbonised barley grain is most likely to have been deposited as the result of activities elsewhere on the settlement (perhaps from within a house beyond the excavated area) in which material became charred from contact with the hearth fire. From there it was presumably tipped onto this midden. Very little time is likely to have elapsed between the seed's charring and its incorporation into the archaeological context of the midden.
