Sample CH06#26 Context 806 Fill of a pit dug through floor layer 595 in House 401 (the fourth floor in the middle roundhouse). Deposit of mottled brown sand (806) filling pit 807. The pit fill cut through floor layer 595 into fill layer 659 and was sealed by a thick capping of red clay (763) set within floor layer 595. It thus dates to the latter part of floor 595's use. Site Phase 12. The articulated but decapitated dog skeleton is likely to have been placed as a formal deposit. Very little time is likely to have elapsed between the death of the dog and the incorporation of its articulated skeleton into the archaeological context of the deposit.
