C14 Radiocarbon Dating - Sample - SUERC-10092
SUERC-10092
Sample S2005-49 Context Post 111 Main wall post (ash) from S wall of building. Sealed by post-pit fill. This was taken from the outer circumference of a vertical timber. The timber was clearly in the round and the earthfast part of the post had been charred before use. The upright element of the timber was also destroyed by fire. The sample was from below the surface so should avoid contamination from the destuction of the post. No bark was found and it is likely that either the timber was debarked for better preservation, or that the bark had been burnt off in the charring process. As the intention of the charring process was to preserve not weaken the timber, it may have destroyed a few of the outer growth rings but it is unlikely to significantly affect the date. It is felt that this is a valid attempt to determine the construction of the structure, as oppossed to the grain dates which relate to it's use and possibly to it's destruction.
