Sample S2005-10 Context Pit 18 Primary Fill 18/3 Primary fill of Pit 18 of pit alignment. Black charcoal rich deposit. Sealed by natural gravel weathered from sides of pit or from material cast out of pit when dug. All the excavated pits had a sequence of an initial cut with some slippage from the sides, then a thick deposit of charcoal followed by a slow gradual infilling from weathering of the edges and possible erosion and slippage of the upcast material. In each pit this process was then interrupted by a secondary cut with a fill which again included large amounts of charcoal. Pits seem to have been used to deposit charcoal from fire. Probably brushwood collected specifically for fires related to pit. Hazel is not very long lived species so even if from core of main trunk likely to be less than 100 years.
