C14 Radiocarbon Dating - Sample - SRR-402

Return to Index

Scottish Radiocarbon Database

SRR-402

Cellulose fraction of wood from a dug out boat with a prow carved in the shape of an animal's head, excavated (Gillespie 1874) from the mud of Loch Lotus. The tree ring count from the sample point to the outside of the canoe adds 80 years, and an additional 50 years or so may have been removed at the time of construction. The tree rings used for the radiocarbon date should thus be taken as 130 calendar years earlier than the date of use of the timber. The code SRR-403 in the 1977 article is an error.
