(NS 5260 7271) Roman Altar found 1826 (NAT)
OS 1:10,000 map, (1973)
A Roman altar was ploughed up in 1826 at NS 5260 7271 (information from A S Robertson to OS, 28 June 1951), E of Castlehill fort (NS57SW 1), presumably on the site of the parade ground (Davies 1968). It measures 3'1 1/2" high by 1'2 1/2" broad. Its well-preserved inscription reads: "CAMPES.TRIBVSET.BRITANNI.QPSETIVS.IVSTVSPREF.COH.
IIII.GAL.V.S.L.L.M", being dedicated to the Spirits of the Campus and to Britannia by the commander of the Fourth Cohort of Gauls, which held Castlehill in the 2nd century. The altar is in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow.
