Archaeology Notes

NS47SE 36 c. 49 72.

A Roman distance slab was presented to Glasgow University in 1695 by Mr Hamilton of Barns, proprietor of Cochno. An inference that it was probably found near Duntocher (NS 4972) was rejected by Macdonald, who also considered it to be a waster as no distance inscription had been cut. Recent research suggests otherwise, and that it clearly belongs to one of the two sectors completed by the XX Legion west of Castlehill. The slab, with little or no ornament, measures 2 ft 5 3/4 ins by 1 ft 10 ins and reads: IMP.C.T.AE.HADRIANO.ANTONINO.AVG.PIO.P.P.VEX.LEG.XX.V.V. FEC.P.

It is in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow.
