This reservoir forms a major component of the Galloway Hydro-Electric Scheme, being retained by the Tongland Dam (NX75SW 37). It has been formed by damming the River Dee, which forms the boundary between the parishes of Tongland and Kelton along most of its length. At ite S end, the reservoir forms the boundary between the parishes of Tongland and Kirkcudbright.
