NJ 786 165 to NJ 565 463 Crawford (1949) examined stretches of the road, finding no evidence of Roman origin, and came to the conclusion that it was simply a medieval road from Aberdeen to the NW.

NJ 7852 1658 to NJ 7795 1999 The 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire 1869, sheets liv, lv, lxiv and lxv) depicts the 'supposed site' of a Roman Road leading NNW from the N end of the Roman temporary camp at Kintore (NJ71NE 28). Its course is shown as pecked lines running roughly parallel with the River Don as far as Port Elphinstone, and forms part of the alleged Roman Road (RX 18) that ran from the River Dee to the Spey near Fochabers.
Information from RCAHMS (ARG), 20 November 2000
The alleged Roman road is speculated to pass through the Roman camp at Kintore (NJ71NE 28). Leading N the road may perhaps have passed between Black Hillock (NJ 7830 1697) and Bridgend (NJ 7893 1686). Near Cairnhall (NJ 7855 1755) it may be overlain by the A96 trunk road to somewhere between Fullerton and North Lodge (NJ c.7800 1840). The road then leaves the modern A96, heads N running through Broomend and enters Inverurie.
