Ellon Castle (new), 1725; rebuilt, 1781-5, John Baxter; incorporated in new house 1851, James Matthews, Mackenzie & Matthews. Began as offices, rebuilt on H-plan. Baxter's front door is inscribed 'George Earl of Aberdeen 1785' and bears a grand segmental pediment broken by an armorial panel from the old castle. The 1851 mansion had a grand Fyvie-like recessed arched centre flanked by tall bay windows and angle turrets, all crisply done in white granite. The 1927 conversion of the offices produced a two-storey house, harled and crowstepped, with low eaves and a small baronial round-tower. Main house demolished, 1927.
