Archaeology Notes

NJ 7071 5208) Barbara's Hillock.

Stone coffin containing Human Remains found AD 1850 (NAT)

OS 6" map, (1938)

'A stone coffin containing calcined bones was found by Mr Jamieson, Haughs of Ashogle, while bringing that part of his land into cultivation about the year 1850. There was no urn.'

OS Name Book 1869.

Excavation, by the author between 24th July and 1st August 1906, proved Barbara's Hillock to be natural.

H St J Gray 1907.

Barbara's Hillock is a large, prominent, natural, grass-covered knoll. On top of the hillock is a small depression, but it is doubtful if it has any connection with the finding of the stone coffin.

Visited by OS (WDJ), 9 September 1964.
