Scope and Content Glamis Castle, Angus, from south-south-east This shows the east wing with its round tower, battlement at roof level, small corbelled corner turret and part of the 1891 remodelling on the far right. The west wing, which has similar features, can been seen on the left. The main block in the centre, with the corbelled round turrets has several carved armorial panels surmounting several windows, and its stair-tower has a clock and a battlemented parapet. By the 19th century the ground floor of the east block would have contained cellars, with private rooms for the family on the first floor and bedrooms on the second floor. The ground and second floors of the west block had similar uses, but the first floor contained rooms used by the family for entertaining. The top floor and attic of the main block mainly contained bedrooms and the clock was used to keep correct time on the estate before time become standardised with the development of the railways in the late 19th century. Glamis Castle was built c.1427 as a tower-house and is the hereditary seat of the Earl of Strathmore. The castle has had many additions since 1435, and was remodelled between 1606 and 1626 before finally being modernised in the late 20th century by the architect James Dunbar-Nasmith. Patrick Lyon, 3rd Earl of Kinghorne, was responsible for major renovations between 1669 and 1690, which included raising the tower and building the west wing and north-east corner wing containing the chapel. Other major works have included the demolishing of the west wing in 1774 and its rebuilding between 1790 and 1800, as well as the east wing's rebuilding in 1891.
