Scope and Content Blocked original entrance to Aberdeen Tolbooth, City of Aberdeen Aberdeen Tolbooth was built in the 17th century and modified during the next three centuries along with the surrounding buildings. Only the tower or 'wardhouse' survives from the original building. This passage leads to the now-blocked original entrance. The ironwork may have been intended to help to support the stair on the next floor. However, there is another explanation. It was probably through this vault that the murderer Francis Irvine and others broke in 1673 to escape the second-floor cell where they were awaiting execution. If so, then the ironwork was installed to prevent another similar escape. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
