Archaeology Notes

NJ96SW 30.07 93919 62311

This type 27 pillbox is visible on post-war RAF vertical air photographs (V/RAF/882, 67-8, flown 30 March 1954) 600m to the NW of the main elements of the radar station.

Information from RCAHMS (DE), October 2002

About 719m NNE of the domestic site (NJ96SW 30.13 and NJ96SW 30.14 ) is a large type 27 pillbox situated on the N-facing slope of the hill on which the Radar Station stands (NJ96SW 30.00). The pillbox stands in a cultivated field and measures about 7.9m NW to SE and 9.00m NE to SW over the entrance. It is constructed of brick and has a very thick reinforced concrete roof. The entrance is on the SW angle and there are loopholes in every face.

Map evidence shows (OS 1:2500 scale map, 1969), that about 40m W of the pillbox was a rectangular building standing adjacent to the public road. No evidence was found of this building at the edge of the field on the date of visit.
