Scope and Content Greenock Custom House, Custom House Place, Greenock, Inverclyde This shows the south side of the building from the south-west. The monumental Classical style was then considered appropriate for major public buildings. The main entrance is on the north side, facing the Clyde estuary across the Steamboat Quay. By 1971 the trade of Greenock was comparatively light, and this building was under-used. It was completely remodelled internally in the 1980s by the Property Services Agency as a modern office to deal with Value Added Tax (VAT), and other customs and excise business. The port of Greenock was, before the deepening of the River Clyde made Glasgow a major port, the greatest trading centre in the west of Scotland. Its custom house was built in 1818, to designs by William Burn, on a scale, and with a grandeur commensurate with the trade of the port. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
