Scope and Content Ashludie House, Victoria Street, Monifieth, Dundee Ashludie House was designed by architect James Maclaren in 1866, for Alexander Graham of Arbroath, flax spinner. It is a two-storeyed Jacobean-style mansion house with attic. It was used as a hospital from 1916 onwards, and is now a geriatric hospital. This photograph shows the house with its shaped gables, balustrades over bay windows, and arcaded portico. The windows have various decorative margins and pediments, and the arched dormers have a carved parapet running between them. This house is built from a combination of coursed masonry and ashlar dressings, with a special feature being made of the long and short quoins, or corner stones. This adds to the richness of the design, with its wealth of decoration. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
