Landing Ship Infantry (LSI): vessels of this type were constructed or converted from merchant ships to troops over considerable distances prior to landing them on hostile shore from (smaller) Landing Craft (qv) which were carried on outboard davits. Vessels of this type were used in considerable numbers in the Second World War, being fundamental to operations in the Pacific, but have since been superseded by vessels of the Landing Platform Dock (LPD) and Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH) types.
