Archaeology Notes

NY58SW 7 5022 8439.

(NY 5022 8439) An earthwork is situated at 700 ft OD on the gentle SE slopes of Blinkbonny Height. A flattened oval on plan, it measures 235 ft NE-SW by 130 ft transversely and consists of a ditch on either side of which is an earthen bank. In the E, where best preserved, the ditch is 8 ft wide and 3 ft deep; the banks, only a few inches above ground level, are spread to a width of 14 ft. There are entrances in the E and S. A sheepfold occupies most of the interior, which is otherwise featureless. Quarrying has destroyed a length of over 100 ft of the banks in the NW.

RCAHMS 1956, visited 1949

This probable settlement is generally as described and planned by the RCAHMS. The ditch is the principal feature, and although it is not as wide or well-defined as that of the settlement on Priest Hill (NY58NW 3) the two works have an overall similarity.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (JRL) 10 August 1979
