(NY 5110 8983) Castleton Cross (NR) (Remains of)

OS 6" map (1957)

A chamfered cross-base, 2 ft 10 ins square at ground level and 2 ft 6 ins square on the upper surface, stands about 50 yds SE of the road opposite Liddel Castle. A pseudo-antique concrete shaft has recently been set up in the original socket. This is the base of the market cross of the ancient village of Castleton, which stood in its immediate vicinity (Name Book 1858).

The 'villa' of Castleton, adjoining the castle (NY58NW 2) and church (NY58NW 1) comes on record in 1220, and gave its name both to the locality and the parish.

RCAHMS 1956, visited 1949

The cross is as described, and stands isolated in rough pasture. The only ground indications of the former village are a hollow-way leading down to the Liddle Water on the NE side of the graveyard (NY 508 898 - see NY58NW 1), and a minor area of rig-and-furrow to the W. Elsewhere in the area, there are undulating pasture fields with modern drainage channels and late turf enclosure banks.

Cross surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (JRL) 9 August 1979.
