(NY 5055 8886) Ancient Earthwork (NAT)

OS 6" map (1957)

Earthwork, Priest Hill: A subrectangular enclosure lies on the gentle NE slope of Priest Hill (620 ft OD). It measures 240 ft E-W by 170 ft transversely inside a double bank with medial ditch. Where best preserved, on the W side, the inner bank, 15 ft thick, is 1 ft above the interior, while the outer bank, 12 ft thick, is 9 ins above the outer ground level. The ditch is 25 ft wide. Of the two gaps in the circuit, that on the W appears to have been an original etnrance, but it has been almost destroyed by cultivation.

The interior is boggy and featureless and the whole work is bordered and crossed by later field banks. This structure is comparable with that at Kirk Hill (NY48NE 1).

RCAHMS 1956, visited 1948

This probable settlement is generally as described and planned by the RCAHMS. The ditch, though largely silted, is the significant feature of the work.

Surveyed at 1:10,000.

Visited by OS (JRL) 6 August 1979
