(NY 3650 8462) Church (NR) (Rems of)

OS 6" map (1957).

For present parish church (NY 3615 8445), see NY38SE 88.

Langholm's first parish church was built in 1703. It was rebuilt (on the same site) in 1747 and 1779. It became disused when the present church was built in 1846 (at NY 3615 8445) and now only the W gable remains.

New Statistical Account (NSA) 1843 (W B Shaw); J and R Hyslop 1912; D J Beattie 1950

The decaying remains of the church stand in the disused churchyard above Langholm High Street. The NW wall is 11.8m long but its line is interrupted by a burial vault and its south end is now lost. A short length of walling, which could be part of the SE wall may, in fact, be modern. A 3.8m long, 4.0m high section of the SW wall also survives. Surveyed at 1:2500

Visited by OS (MJF), 25 September 1979.

Watching Brief (12 June 2017 - 21 June 2017)

NY 36515 84623 The Kirk Wynd Cemetery Wall forms the SE wall of the cemetery at Langholm Old Parish Church and Burial Ground in Langholm. A watching brief was undertaken, 12 – 21 June 2017, during the demolition of a 30m section of the cemetery wall, plus the removal of five headstones, that were located adjacent to and incorporated into the wall.

The work revealed that the cemetery wall had been subject to previous fairly modern repairs, with the presence of cement within some areas of the wall making these areas difficult to demolish by hand. The soil located immediately behind the wall had also clearly been disturbed, as during the removal of the headstones and demolition of the wall it was found to contain fragments of modern pottery, glass bottles and plastic. This indicates that the wall had probably been subject to previous significant repair.
