Activities

Field Visit (28 April 1993)

NY37NE 48 c. 38 77

In 1768, the Duke of Buccleuch initiated coal mining operations at Canonbie, concentrating at Holehouse (NY37NE 34) and Byreburnfoot.

The workings at Holehouse were located on the W side of the River Esk, and provided coal for a local market. They were abandoned in 1770 following a flood, and no trace of them was found in field survey between Gilnockie Tower (NY37NE 3) and Byreburnfoot steading (NY37NE 112).
