Archaeology Notes

NX96NE 9.04 c. 965 664

Location formerly entered as NX 96 66.

The Building Chronicle, issue no. 1, dated 10th May 1854 records: 'One day lately, whilst Mr John Wilson was employed in cultivating his garden, which lies within the precincts ... of Sweetheart Abbey, he turned up ... a lump of shining metal which, on examination, proved to be a number of silver coins of the reigns of Charles I and II of England and Scotland, and Louis XIV of France. The coins were closely packed together and appeared as if calcined by fire, but were in a good state of preservation. Very few silver coins have hitherto been found within the precincts, but they have all been discovered near the same spot, which tradition records as having been the site of the house wherein the monks received payment of their tithes.'

The Building Chronicle 1854-5.
