The pre-existing Loch Doon was dammed and the water level raised to form a major element of stage II of the Galloway Hydro-electric Scheme.

This pipeline and other structures crosses Carsphairn Lane at Drumjohn [Drumjohn Knowe: name centred NX 5246 9744], and forms part of the link between the Water of Deugh and Loch Doon. It falls within the area of the field-system NX59NW 18.
