(Area centred NX 484 935) Mesolithic occupation around the head of Loch Doon is indicated by the occurrence of flint and chert implements and waste in areas between the 648ft and 705ft levels exposed by fluctuations in the waters of the loch, which have eroded the peat covering. It has apparently stretched from the level of Pickmaw Island (NX 486 940) up both sides of the loch. The implements include scrapers, blades, points and microliths. Some of the finds are in Dumfries Museum, others are retained by Ansell.

Loch Doon is at present full to capacity. No Mesolithic occupation sites could be found around its shore.

Concentrations of flint (including tools and waste material) have been recorded at four locations on the shore of Loch Doon (NX 479 941,482 939,483 937 and 484 931), between the burns known as the Carrick Lane and the Gala Lane.
