Archaeology Notes

NX16SW 111.02 centred 10659 60234

A triple turret trainer and other buildings relating to training and instruction are situated within Macgill and Douglas Woods on the S shore of Loch of Inch.

The brick and concrete built triple turret trainer with a pitched corrugated asbestos roof is a type A to design number 11023/40. The foundations and footings of other buildings and air-raid shelters are to be found scattered around this part of the airfield.

The area is visible on vertical air photographs (106G/Scot/UK 41, 3310-3312, flown 4 May 1946), which show that the buildings and huts extended as far as the NW end of Macgill Wood.

Information from the Defence of Britain Project, RAF Castle Kennedy report, Bell, Brown, Fidler and Starling, 1998; RCAHMS (DE), April 2006
