Archaeology Notes

NX13NW 33 1245 3692.

Hanging on the N wall within the church is an ancient oak panel of triangular shape. It measures 3ft along the base line, and along each of the other sides 2ft 7ins. Carved on it in low relief at the apex are two hands appaume, gules, and below, a stag's head, argent (for Adair), followed by the undernoted inscription, which covers the remainder of the triangle - each line separated by a raised fillet about 3/8 ins in depth. The arms are in their colours, and the letters have been painted yellow, now much faded: P.A.D.R. / O GOD MAK ME TO HEIR IN FAITH AND / PRACKTEIS IN LOVE THY HOLY WIRD AND / COMA(N)DEME(N)TIS. THOU ART ONLY MY / SUPOIRT. GOD MAK ME THANKFUL. 1618.

P A D R apparently refers to Patrick Adair, one of the Adairs of Kinhilt, who were in Drummore about the date mentioned.
