Archaeology Notes

NX06NW 44.02 centred 0331 6573

The concrete bases of at least two of the aircraft hangars for the base are situated in an area partly occupied by the Lochryan Caravan Centre. In addition are a few huts and hut bases and a concrete hardstanding at NX 03347 65924, which is depicted on the current OS 1:2500 scale digital map.

The three aircraft hangars are visible on vertical air photographs (106G/LA 136, 1053, flown 20 February 1945 and CPE/Scot/UK 307, 4233-4234, flown 4 October 1947), which show a K type at NX 0331 6573 and two unidentified, possibly Shetland type at NX 0340 6538 and NX 0340 6528 respectively. In addition, a further ten servicing sheds are visible on the photographs, immediately W of the shoreline from c.NX 0333 6602 to c.NX 0341 6487, just N of Salchrie Croft.
