Awhirk

An IA Clepsydra or water-clock, was ploughed up early in 1937, 'on the inner slope' of a knoll of considerable size, situated almost in front of the buildings of Awhirk farm and 40 to 50 ft S of the road. It is a bronze bowl approximately 21 ins. in diameter, and 11 ins. deep, with a hole almost 1/8" in diameter, in the centre of the base, and is believed to be of Irish origin.

This so-called Clepsydra is a Celtic lathe-turned bronze bowl, using a technique adopted from the Romans. "The hole is perfectly well explained as a means of fixing the vessel on the lathe ... it is often found still containing the bronze or iron plug with which it will thereupon have been blocked." The bowl is on loan to the NMAS (loan No: L. 1946.24), from Mr Wither.
