Archaeology Notes

NX04NE 23 0680 4851.

NX 0678 4851. A triangular standing stone 1.6m high x 3.0m around the base with four circular depressions, c.2" across and 1/2" deep on the W face which may be cup-marks, situated on flat ground at the foot of a slight rise.

Surveyed at 1/2500.

Visited by OS (RD) 9 September 1970

An irregular boulder of pink granite stands in a field 230m NE of Mid Float farmhouse; the boulder is roughly triangular at the base, measuring 1m by 1.1m by 1.2m, and it is 1.6m high. There are traces of wedge holes on the NE edge of the stone, suggesting that it is no more than a glacial erratic which has been split and set up relatively recently.

The cup-marks recorded on the SW face of the stone, about 0.7m above the ground, are probably natural features; only one is regular in shape, and it measures 60mm in diameter by 10mm in depth.

Visited by RCAHMS (SH) August 1984.
