Archaeology Notes

NT96NW 11.01 904 659.

Four silver coins of Edward II were presented to the heritors of Coldingham parish. They were found at the back of the furnace of the baking department of King Edgar's Palace, where several hundred coins were deposited, but were so corroded that they were reduced to powder when touched. Other coins, found at various times by people working about the Priory, have also been given to the heritors. They include: a silver penny of Robert II or III found in the church choir, a silver coin of James V, found in the S transept, beneath the tombstone bearing the cock and sword, a bronze medal or counter, inscribed with Henry IV of France, 1604, and a silver coin of Henry VIII, found in the aisle of the N transept, also copper coins of Mary, Queen of Scots and James VI.

Activities

Geophysical Survey (24 February 2007)

NT 904 659 A resistance geophysical survey was conducted on 24 February 2007 in the area to be developed as a physic garden for the Coldingham Priory Adopt-a-Monument project. The area lies next to the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Coldingham Priory. No trace of buildings was found, and there were no features to impede the progress of the proposed physic garden.

Metal Detector Survey (19 October 2007)

NT 90382 65880 A day of metal-detecting was undertaken on 19 October 2007 with the Friends of the Priory in

collaboration with Scottish Borders Council, the Council for Scottish Archaeology, Bill Wyman, Richard Havers and pupils at Coldingham Primary School. This covered the area to the south of the Priory ruins subjected to geophysical survey by the Edinburgh Archaeological Field Society. This ground was disturbed from previous excavation by the Berwickshire Naturalists Field Club.

The event tutored participants in responsible metal-detector methods and approaches while investigating the excavation spoil for artefacts before development of the Coldingham Priory Community Garden. More information is available at www.scottisharchaeology.org.uk/projects/coldingham.html.

Archive will be deposited with RCAHMS.

Watching Brief (April 2016)

NT 904 659 A watching brief was carried out in April 2016 in advance of development. The area was considered of interest as is between Coldingham Priory and St Andrew’s Burn, which may have been canalised in the past. The work established that deep deposits of undated made ground were present. Very little natural subsoil was exposed. The findings suggest that the area had been terraced, probably during the construction of the current house.
