Accessing Scotland's Past Project

The walled garden at Swinton House dates, like so many of the associated structures in the estate, from the early nineteenth century.

The garden is tiered, and is aligned to allow a clear view from the south front of the house. It is enclosed by rubble walls, with sandstone gate piers flanking the entrance.

A greenhouse within the garden still possesses some decorative cast ironwork, including ridge detailing on the roof and ornamental finials. The mechanisms used to open and shut the ridge vents are also still in place.

A single-storeyed cottage with attic adjoining the wall on the east may have provided accommodation for the gardener. It is built from sandstone, and has castellated gables. Another ancillary structure on the south wall, built in a similar style, may have been a byre.
