Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Map evidence suggests that the farmhouse at Little Swinton may date from the late eighteenth century. Standing two storeys and an attic in height, it features Classical detailing alongside the crowstepped gables which are a traditional element of Scottish architecture.

Later alterations, carried out in the late nineteenth century, include the addition of a projecting porch over the main entrance. At the rear and east of the farmhouse, there are a range of ancillary structures which look onto an enclosed courtyard, entered by a large, square-headed entrance pend.

The farmsteading associated with Little Swinton, which would have comprised a range of structures including cattle courts, stabling, and barns, lies some distance away, on the other side of the road.
