(Centred NT 86217 18888) Cultivation Terraces (NR)
OS 6" map, (1962).
There are cultivation terraces on the W face of Mallie Side, above homestead NT81NE 4.
RCAHMS 1956, visited 1938.
There are three or four well-defined lynchets on the lower W slopes of the hill.
Visited by OS (JLD) 23 August 1960.
These cultivation terraces are now badly eroded.
Visited by OS (TRG) 9 August 1976.
A narrow band of contour cultivation, measuring 500m from N to S by 50m to 100m, lies on the moderately steep to steep W-facing slope of Mallie Side above the boundary-bank (NT81NE 31). The boundaries are undefined except on the SW where the upper limits of cross-contour rig (NT81NE 10) overlie the lower limit of the cultivation. The cultivation is only visible from the opposite hillside, and has the appearance of being very widely spaced, estimated at between 12m and 15m apart, although a previous field visit notes four well-defined lynchets (OS field investigator, 23 August 1960).
