The first lifeboat was sent to Dunbar in 1808; there are few details of its operation, and the station closed c. 1821. A new lifeboat house was built on the harbour quay in 1864-5. This remained in use until 1901, when the present building was constructed. An inshore rescue boat has been kept in the 1901 building since 1968. In 1996 this building was extended and refurbished.

(Further details of history and rescues cited).

N Leach 1999.
