Accessing Scotland's Past Project

To the south of the site once occupied by Spottiswoode House, there is a building named the Bear's Den. Described as a small stone structure, it is likely that this building was a grotto, built to provide a rest stop and a point of interest to be observed on walks through the grounds.

The building is of simple construction, consisting of upright slabs topped with flat lintel-stones.

Modern photographs show the building is in a partial state of collapse, though it may have been left that way for some time, perhaps to add an ancient air to the grounds of Spottiswoode House.
